Costum Winner For Original Nike Dunk
Peace World, When i got wind of what Zavi created, i was shocked. She took art and creativity to a another level. She used Shin Tanaka's PDF on how to build a paper Nike. Shin Tanaka is the dopest dude from Japan that makes paper toys; Google him. Ok so, she ended up being the grand prize winner for the Teen Diaries Online website contest. Niceeeeee !!
*Peep the interview..
Aeshia: Are you currently in college?
Zavi: I just graduated from UC Santa Cruz [class of] 2007 with a [bachelors degree] in psychology.
Aeshia: Did you study art in high school or college?
Zavi: I took art classes and was involved in art programs throughout high school and college, but I never really viewed it as more than a hobby. Now I am starting to see that design is something that I really enjoy, and plan to pursue it further as a possible career.
Aeshia: How long have you been making your own costumes?
Zavi: When I was younger, my grandmother and mom helped me make costumes. I started making my own costumes when I was in high school.
Aeshia: What other characters have you been for Halloween?
Zavi: Last year I was Storm from X-Men, before that I was a pirate, flavor flav (my friends were other rappers), and spongebob squarepants. My favorite costumes so far were the one that I made this year and a Homey D. Clown costume my mom helped me make when I was little.
Aeshia: Where do you find inspiration for your costume ideas?
Zavi: I get ideas from all over. I think that it is good to think outside the box. You can get ideas from movies, books, cartoons, the web, TV etc... Don't be afraid to dress crazy and just have fun. You don't have to be sexy. The year that my friends and I cross dressed as rappers was the most fun. We carried a stereo and had a break dance battle in the middle of the street.
Aeshia: How can other young women create unique Halloween costumes if they aren't a highly skilled seamstress?
Zavi: There are a lot of websites out there where you can get ideas and directions on how to make costumes. You can make costumes out of things that you already have. You can also try getting items from your friends and family members. I encourage others to make their costumes and to try creating other things and art in general. You don't have to take an art class or be an art major to create. You can buy a kit, go to a website, read a book or just freestyle and make almost anything.
Editors note: Congrats to Zavi !! Yo, anybody wanna make a Sneaker Bistro Dunk next Halloween? LOL.
